It arose after the Wars of Religion and the Council of Trent, led by figures like  Cardinal Pierre de Bérulle ,  Jean Eudes ,  Jean-Jacques Olier , and  St. Vincent de Paul , among others. They emphasized the  Incarnation of Christ  – meditating on Jesus’s life “states” from infancy to resurrection – and fostered intense interior devotion combined with active charity. Central themes include adoration of God’s greatness, communion with Christ’s sentiments, devotion to the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and the sanctification of clergy and laity alike.
